  • Mammograms do a great deal of good and very little harm. Yes, there are false positives that result in further tests, but there are also false negatives, where certain rarer types of breast cancers are missed. Neither are reasons to discount a test that is accurate the majority of the time.

  • And women of all races must be educated about signs of breast cancer other than the LUMP. Some of the rarer forms are more deadly and do not have a lump or even pick up on mammograms, but can be very agressive.

  • I think Jamie's point is that none of us are genetically perfect. If there were tests for every possible condition, whether it is your child having ADD to they will die of cancer at 50 or a heart condition at 80, would that be grounds for abortion?

  • This is dangerous on two counts. 1) These medications and their dosages should be monitored by medical professionals. Not as likely to happen if they are over the counter. Statins especially are already being overprescribed and abused with doctor supervision, can't imagine without.

  • Actually knowing that the gene is in the family may allow younger women and their doctors to be more vigilant, such as starting mammograms younger, starting self-exams younger.

  • There may be a few kids who are just prone to caveties, but I would guess 99% of this is parenting. Brush teeth as soon as they come in, they make little soft brushes just for babies.
